How to Add Breadcrumbs On WordPress Website

Breadcrumb Example Apple

Once upon a time there were two kids named Hansel and Gretel. They both were the only children of their parents. But their wicked step mother decides to send them to woods because they used to eat too much. These children being smart had collected white pebbles and places them on their way, so that they could reach back to their home safely and they successfully does. Seeing this, their shocking and wicked mother again sends them to the woods but this time they are out with pebbles and so they find a bread and put small pieces of them on the way but meanwhile the birds eats away them and they are lost. Well…well…well…..you all might be wondering and might have checked out uptil now that which site have we opened? There is no relevance to the topic mentioned here and ultimately you might be little irritated too. But hey don’t worry, you are absolutely on the correct way 😛 . (Unlike Hansel and Gretel). I guess this story was the greatest inspiration to Apple.Inc. Yes, we are talking about nothing else but the breadcrumbs on an apple’s site.

 So, What are Breadcrumbs?

Breadcrumbs are also known as “breadcrumb trail”. It is a navigation trail that allows visitors to understand their current location into a website. Here is an example of one of the well-known and my favorite  😛 “Web-Site Apple which uses awesome breadcrumb trail”.

That written text I have outlined in Black Color is an example of a breadcrumb.

There are bunch of advantages of using breadcrumbs on your site:

  • Usability: It gives customers a user-friendly feel and also  indicates surfing around through your site
  • Easy to backtrack: If your website is created out of many levels then it can render the exact navigations in a far more easy way.
  • SEO: The look for google bot engines will understand your breadcrumbs and add them to the google search page.

Installing  Breadcrumbs :-

If you are using the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin then this plugin have inbuilt Breadcrumbs option to activate the Breadcrumbs Tail

    Hi Mosam,

I like the reference to the story – you made it interesting.

Your tutorial is based on WPSEO by Yoast but I’m using Thesis 2.x and can’t use the plugin. So it won’t apply to the themes that has their own in-built SEO. I’ll have to look for other methods to install breadcums.

    Hi Mosam,

This was an excellent article on breadcrumbs. Indeed, I think breadcrumbs are very important because as you said, they aid navigation for the user. I use a WordPress theme called Persuasion by Mysitemyway and luckily breadcrumbs comes as a part of the theme.

    Thank you.

This is a cool tip. Breadcrumb really organizes hierarchy in a blogs look. Though for we who use Genesis framework, we don’t need to do it manually. Thanks for the article anyway.

I was thinking to create some breadcrumbs on my tech blog but I hesitated 🙂 I think if there are not many sub-menus/navigations to go to, a breadcrumb is not necessary. But I guess each blog is different
